The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is a 90-kilometre rail loop of the Melbourne metropolitan area. SRL will connect to every major rail line from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line. As a result, the SRL will transition Melbourne's rail network from its current radial status to an oribital network. 

The Loop will consist of three sections:

  • SRL East - Cheltenham to Box Hill
  • SRL North - Box Hill to Melbourne Airport
  • SRL West - Melbourne Airport to Werribee

The precincts to be connected by SRL include: Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood, Box Hill, Doncaster, Heidelberg, Bundoora, Reservoir, Fawkner, Broadmeadows, Melbourne Airport, Sunshine and Werribee.

As well as providing a rail link to the airport, the project will also build three 'transport super hubs' at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine to connect regional passengers to the Suburban Rail Loop.

Given the scale of the Loop, construction is to be staged over several decades, with the SRL East and SRL North sections to be constructed first. The west section will be planned and constructed in conjunction with the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, Melbourne Airport Rail and the Western Rail Plan.

The SRL East and SRL North sections have a preliminary costing in the range of $30 to $50.5 billion. A timeline and estimated cost for the completion of SRL West has not been provided at this stage.

The first stage of the Suburban Rail Loop – SRL East – is a fully-tunnelled 26 kilometre metro corridor between Cheltenham in the South and Box Hill in the North. The line will include six stations, including new interchanges with existing heavy rail stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Glen Waverley and Box Hill, with new stations at Monash and Burwood. The new interchange in Clayton will act as a 'transport super hub, connecting regional passengers to the Suburban Rail Loop.

The six underground stations will range from 17 to 23 metres below street level and will be built using a 'bottom-up' method. The location of the entrances will be near existing train stations and central amenities.

SRL East has been split into seven work packages: 

  • Works Package A: Initial and Early Works
    • site establishment
    • utility relocation and protection works
    • road and traffic modifications
    • tunnel Access Shaft structures
    • drainage and civil works
    • ground Improvement works, and
    • temporary works and tram works
  • Works Package B: Power Construction Supply Works
    • connecting Suburban Rail Loop East to Victoria’s shared electricity network, and
    • construction of onsite substations
  • Works Package C: Cheltenham to Glen Waverley Tunnels
    • tunnelling and cross passages between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley, and
    • Clayton and Monash station box excavations, including temporary retaining structures
  • Works Package D: Glen Waverley to Box Hill Tunnels 
    • tunnelling and cross passages between Glen Waverley and Box Hill
    • Burwood and Glen Waverley station box excavations, including temporary retaining structures, and
    • an intervention shaft structure
  • Works Package E: Cheltenham to Glen Waverley Stations
    • station building works at Cheltenham, Clayton and Monash
    • station box excavation at Cheltenham, including temporary retaining structures
    • all station work to complete stations, excluding work included in Works Package G, and
    • surface work at station precincts
  • Works Package F: Glen Waverley to Box Hill Stations

The Government of Western Australia is exploring options to construct a new container port at Kwinana. This would see the eventual transfer of container handling capacity from Fremantle Port to the new Kwinana Port over time.

There are two preferred options for handling container freight over the transition between the Freemantle and Kwinana ports. Both ultimately result in all freight capacity shifting from Fremantle to Kwinana, and both require the construction of a new land-backed port in the Kwinana Industrial Area serviced by an upgraded Anketell Road freight route.

This project involves the delivery of 25 new X’Trapolis 2.0 trains for Melbourne's metropolitan network.

These new trains are expected to boost reliability of current services and accommodate additional services in future, driven by the pipeline of rail capital projects underway across Melbourne. New rolling stock is expected also enable the ageing trains on the network to be retired by 2030.

The new trains are expected to have a minimum 60 per cent local content requirement, and be manufactured in Alstom's Ballarat facility.

The project also involves an upgrade to the Craigieburn Train Maintenance Facility, allowing the new trains to be efficiently housed and maintained.

The New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) has a proposed capacity of 8,000 megawatts of generation. The REZ is to be located  in the New England region, centred around Armidale. 

The scope of works for each stage of the network expansion is yet to be identified.

The Pottinger Energy Park, proposed by Someva Renewables, is a generation and storage project to be located around 60 kilometres south of Hay, NSW. The project includes:

  • a 300 megawatt solar farm
  • a 1.2 gigawatt wind farm, and 
  • a 500 megawatt / 2000 megwatt hour. 

The project would be located in the South-West Renewable Energy Zone.

The new Shellharbour Hospital aims to meet increased demand for health services in the Southern Illawarra region. The new seven-storey hospital will be constructed on a greenfield site in Dunmore NSW and is expected to comprise:

  • an Emergency Department
  • specialised elective surgery services
  • rehabilitation and aged care services
  • acute medical services
  • mental health services
  • drug and alcohol unit
  • renal dialysis
  • outpatient care services, and
  • carparking.

The project is being delivered by NSW Health Infrastructure, in partnership with the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.

ACEnergy's proposed Yanco Battery Energy Storage System is a 250-megawatt (MW) / 1,100-megwatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS). The project is to be located near Yanco, approximately 7 km south of Leeton and 25 km north-west of Narrandera in south-western New South Wales. It would be located just outside of the South West Renewable Energy Zone. 

The scope of the project includes: 

  • a 250MW / 1,100 MWh, four-hour BESS
  • underground cabling connecting BESS and MVPS
  • a 33/132kV substation
  • a transmission line connecting the BESS substation to the Yanco Transgrid substation, and 
  • temporary construction and property access.

The Glen Innes Battery Energy Storage project is a proposed 200 megawatt / 800 megawatt hour battery energy storage project to be located adjacent to the Glen Innes Substation in New South Wales. Three hectares of land has been secured adjacent to the substation. 

The battery is being developed by Firm Power and is located within the New England Renewable Energy Zone.
