NorthLink WA is an upgrade to three sections of highway to support increased freight and passenger travel to and from Perth. NorthLink WA will be constructed in three sections.

The Central Section will deliver an improved link from Reid Highway to Ellenbrook, removing two intersections along the route, at Tonkin Highway / Reid Highway and Beechboro Road / Gnangara Road respectively. Key components of the project include:

- an interchange at the Reid Highway and Tonkin Highway intersection;
- flyovers at Marshall Road and Beechboro Road;
- interchanges at Hepburn Avenue, Gnangara Road and at Ellenbrook; and
- new cycling and pedestrian facilities including a four-metre wide shared path to Ellenbrook.

In January 2017, Great Northern Connect (GNC), a joint venture between Laing O'Rourke and BGC Contracting, was awarded the contract to deliver the central section.
