The 127 kilometre M1 Pacific motorway is a key road corridor between Sydney, the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Hunter regions; it also links the New England and Pacific Highways.

Current or proposed projects to upgrade and widen the M1 Pacific Motorway include:

- widening the M1 between the Kariong and Somersby interchanges (construction to commence 2017);
- widening the M1 from four to six lanes between the Tuggerah and Doyalson interchanges (construction to commence in 2017); and
- upgrading the M1 Weakleys Drive and John Renshaw Drive intersection (ongoing planning, construction expected to commence in 2018).

The works are valued at approximately $400 million in total and will be funded by the Federal and NSW governments, with the Federal Government contribution capped at $195.8 million.

The 127 kilometre M1 Pacific Motorway is a key road corridor between Sydney, the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Hunter regions; it also links the New England and Pacific Highways. There are currently $400 million worth of works planned to upgrade the link.

This project will deliver upgrades to the section of the Motorway between Kariong Interchange and Somersby Interchange. It will cater for the expected increase in traffic forecast as a result of predicted growth in the Central Coast, Hunter Region and North Coast, along with greater freight demand.

Key features of the project include:

  •  repairing sections of the concrete motorway between the Kariong and Somersby interchanges to facilitate construction of an additional lane; 
  •  widening the motorway between the Kariong and Somersby interchanges to provide three lanes in each direction; and
  •  upgrading three of the four ramps at the Kariong Interchange.


The project is currently in the design stage, with Arcadis awarded the design contract in 2015.

The construction contract will be awarded over two phases. The first is the Registrations of Interest (ROI), which closed in November 2016. The second phase will be governed by a separate Request for Tender (RFT), which will be issued to shortlisted applicants following a detailed evaluation process.

Construction is expected to start in 2017 and to be completed in 2020.

This project will deliver upgrades to the 12 kilometre section of Motorway between Wyong Road, Tuggerah and the Doyalson Link Road. Key features of the project include:

  •  widening a 12 kilometre section of the motorway to provide three lanes in each direction between Wyong Road at Tuggerah and the Doyalson Link Road;
  •  rebuilding a nine kilometre section of the motorway between Wyong River and the Doyalson interchange to improve the road surface;
  •  improving road drainage for greater wet weather safety; and
  •  providing safety and capacity improvements to key motorway interchanges at Warnervale and Doyalson.

The project received government approval in 2014. In March 2017 CPB Contractors were awarded the project. Construction is expected to be completed in 2020.
