The Warkworth to Wellsford project is the second stage of the Ara Tūhono Pūhoi to Wellsford Road of National Significance (RoNS). Once completed the new motorway will provide a bypass of Warkworth and Wellsford, connecting to stage one of the RoNS, Pūhoi to Warkworth, which is currently under construction.

In February 2017, the indicative route of the highway was released for community feedback. New Zealand Transport Agency is aiming to finalise the route by the end of 2018.

The Ara Tūhono Pūhoi to Wellsford RoNS is a planned circa 38 kilometre extension of the Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) from the Johnstone’s Hill tunnels just south of Pūhoi to just north of Warkworth and is designed to provide a better connection from Northland for freight, tourism and motorists.

Work is about to begin on constructing one of the main access points for construction traffic working on the Pūhoi to Warkworth Road of National Significance. The site access point known as SAP4, will allow construction vehicles to enter and exit the project site.
