Auckland Northern Corridor

The Auckland Northern Corridor project (also known as the Northern Corridor Improvements (NCI) project) will provide a connection from the North Shore to and from the Western Ring Route, as an alternative to travelling on SH1 through the central city. The project includes:

  • a new motorway link between the Northern Motorway (SH1) and the Upper Harbour Highway (SH18), including the upgrade of SH18 to full motorway standard between the Albany Highway interchange to SH1
  • new lanes on the Northern Motorway between SH18 and Greville Road
  • an extension of the existing Northern Busway from Constellation Bus Station further north to Albany Bus Station, and
  • a range of local road, cycling and amenity commitments. 

Once completed, the dedicated busway will operate through to Albany Bus Station.

PROJECT HISTORY

Dec 2016 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) lodged an application for six notices of requirements and 25 resource consents with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). The EPA accepted the application as complete on 22 December 2016.
Feb 2017 The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) initiated a four week public submission process that will be followed by a Board of Inquiry hearing in August 2017.
Nov 2017 A Board of Inquiry (BOI) released its final decision granting designation and resource consent for the Northern Corridor Improvements project.
Feb 2022 The direct motorway link between SH18 and SH1 was opened for use.
May 2022 Construction on the Northern Busway extension of the project was completed and the busway became operational.
Jul 2022 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency indicated that the expected construction completion date for the project has been pushed back from 2021 to September 2022.
Dec 2022 The shared pedestrian and cyclist path opened for public use. Additionally, the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency indicated a new expected construction completion date in the second quarter of 2023.
Feb 2023 The new motorway link between the Northern Motorway (SH1) and the Upper Harbour Highway (SH18) commenced operations.
Mar 2023 The New Zealand Government has announced the completion of the direct link from State Highway (SH1) to State Highway 18 (SH18), marking the completion of the Western Ring Route on Auckland’s North Shore as part of the project.
Apr 2023 The New Zealand Government announced that construction of the Northern Corridor was completed and had commenced operations.
