Following the NSW Government's announcement of the new Waterloo Metro Station, the Waterloo social housing estate will be redeveloped with new social housing and more affordable and private housing.
The Waterloo Redevelopment Precinct covers land owned by the NSW Government, including the Waterloo social housing estate and the land around and above the new Waterloo metro station, known as the Metro Quarter. It also includes a number of privately owned properties.
At planning stages, the redevelopment has been divided into the following sub-precincts:
- Waterloo South
- Waterloo Central, and
- Waterloo North.
The revised proposal for Waterloo South, which accounts for 65 per cent of the entire site, will provide more open space, wider tree-lined streets, reduced building heights and bike paths through the precinct. The new proposal includes the development of around 3000 new properties, 30 per cent of which will be social housing.
