The Government of South Australia announced a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that will enable construction to commence on the state’s largest solar farm and a grid-scale battery in the Upper Spencer Gulf region.
Through the PPA, ZEN Energy, in partnership with SIMEC Energy, will construct the 280-megawatt (MW) Cultana Solar Farm near Whyalla and the 100 MW Playford Big Battery near Port Augusta.
The Playford Big Battery will provide Frequency Control Ancillary Services and Fast Frequency Response to the National Electricity Market. Energy generated from the Cultana Solar Farm will contribute to the national electricity grid via the existing Cultana and Whyalla substations.
2022: Expected completion of the Cultana Solar Farm
2023: Expected completion of the Playford Big Battery
SIMEC has announced the Playford Big Battery will be delivered by an Engineer, Procure and Construction (EPC) contractor.
October 2020: the SA Government signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with ZEN Energy to provide the SA Government with electricity from the solar farm and battery.
August 2019: The Playford Big Battery received development approval.
May 2019: The Cultana Solar Farm recied development approval.
The Cultana solar farm and Playford big battery are being developed by SIMEC Energy Australia to supply the Whyalla Steelworks operations to develop a ‘green steel’ hub, however, the PPA will also see ZEN energy drawing electricity to supply the South Australian Government. The pricing details of the PPA have not been disclosed.
The Cultana solar farm will be the largest solar farm in the state, overtaking the 220 MW Bungala facility, while the Playford Big Battery will be the second largest battery in South Australia.
