Marinus Link Stage Two

Marinus Link Stage Two, as part of Project Marinus, will be delivered following the completion of Marinus Link Stage One and will include delivery of a second 750MW High Voltage DC link between New Converter Stations in Burnie, Tasmania, and Hazlewood, Victoria.

Marinus Link Stage Two will be delivered alongside the second stage of the North West Transmission Developments.

Financing

The project will recieive access to a concessional loan from the Rewiring the Nation plan, through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, for approximately 80 per cent of the costs.

The additional 20 per cent is to be an equity investment between the Commonwealth, Victoria and Tasmania. Originally, the equity investment was to be shared equally between the three governments (agreed in October 2022). However, in September 2023, the Federal and Tasmanian Governments announced a new agreement had been reached which would see the Federal Government's equity contribution increase to 49 per cent and the Tasmanaian Government's contribution decrease to 17.7 per cent. The Victorian contribtuion is to remain at 33.3 per cent.

PROJECT HISTORY

Sep 2023 Development of Marinus Link Stage Two was rescheduled to commence following successful installation and operation of Marinus Link Stage One. Additionally, the Tasmanian, Victorian, and Commonwealth Governments agreed to a revised funding allocation for the Marinus Link Project.
Nov 2023 TasNetworks announced the cost estimate for Stage Two is $2.2 billion for the construction of the cable and $550 million for the remainder of the NWTD.
Dec 2023 AEMO's 2024 ISP confirms cost estimate of Stage Two to be $2.7 billion ± 30%.
