Wellington Research Hubs

The New Zealand Government has announced the establishment of three 'Science and Innovation Hubs' across Wellington in Budget 2023-24. 

The focus and location of the three hubs are:

  • National Centre for Oceans, Climate and Hazards Research, to be located in Greta Point
  • Health and Wellbeing Corridor including Pandemic Research and Response Institute, to be based between Kelburn, Mount Cook and Newtown, and
  • Research, Innovation and Technology Park, to be the focus of a research park in Gracefield, Lower Hutt.

PROJECT HISTORY

May 2023 The New Zealand Government allocated $400 million for capital works to the hubs in Budget 2023-24.
Jul 2023 Report to the Minister of Research, Science and Innovation from the Wellington Science City Panel that sets out a recommended configuration for research and innovation capability in the Wellington region, prepared for Budget 2023, is publicly released.
Feb 2024 The Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology announced that the Te Ara Paerangi - Future Pathways project, which included the Wellington Research Hubs, would not continue.
