Armidale East BESS

FRV Services Australia have proposed the Armidale East BESS, a battery project with a 158-megawatt (MW) / 1,440-megawatt hour (MWh) capacity. The project will be located approximately 16 kilometres east of Armidale, within the Tamworth Regional Council area and the New England REZ. 

Construction of the BESS would include the following key components: 

  • 158-MW /1,440-MWh BESS including:
    • battery containers
    • inverters
    • transformers
    • cooling systems if required
    • fire suppressions systems
    • switch rooms
  • an onsite substation
  • switch yard
  • new access road to the site, and
  • parking site, site office and amenities for operational use.

The BESS would connect to the National Electricity Market via the overhead TransGrid north-running 330-kilovolt transmission line, which feeds into the Armidale substation and will connect directly into the Project via overhead cabling.

Nov 2023 FRV Services Australia submitted a final Scoping Report to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, requesting the Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements.
Dec 2023 The NSW Government issued the Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements for the project.
Feb 2026 ASL awarded Long-Term Energy Service Agreements to six long-duration storage projects under tender round six of the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. The six projects have a combined capacity of 1.17 gigawatts and 12 gigawatt hours. The announcement also confirmed the project's expected capacity was revised from 500 MW / 1,000 MWh to 158 MW / 1,440 MWh.
