Barron River Bridge Replacement

The proposed Barron River Bridge in Kuranda includes construction of a new 270 metre, two-lane bridge with an active transport path, located In Kuranda on the Kennedy Highway.

The preferred option involves:

  • construction of a new 270m bridge 
  • new piles, piers, headstocks, and superstructure
  • decommissioning of existing bridge structure, and
  • new alignment downstream of the existing bridge.

The procurement model for the project is two stages, with two proponents invited to undertake planning and preliminary design work in an Early Contractor Involvement phase, before a single proponent is awarded a Design and Construct Collaborative Project Agreement contract.

PROJECT HISTORY

Apr 2025 The Federal Government announced $245 million in funding for the project.
May 2025 The Queensland Government released a Business Case Summary for the project. The business case recommends constructing a new two-lane bridge with an active transport path, with the existing bridge to be decommissioned.
Jun 2025 The 2025-26 QLD Budget announced the preferred option for the project, and announced $245 million in funding for the project. The Budget provides no further details on allocations over the next four years.
Sep 2025 The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads commenced an Expression of Interest process for the project.
