The Barwon Women’s and Children's Hospital will service Geelong’s rapidly growing population and will be located within the University Hospital Geelong precinct.

The project scope includes:

  • new operating theatres
  • expanded paediatric and maternity inpatient units
  • birthing suites
  • special care nursery
  • maternity assessment unit
  • paediatric and maternity outpatient facilities, and
  • a new main entrance to University Hospital Geelong.

PROJECT HISTORY

Apr 2019 The Federal Government committed $50 million towards the project.
May 2022 The Victorian Government committed $525 million towards the hospital in its 2022-23 State Budget. This is inclusive of the $50 million Federal Government funding contribution.
Aug 2022 The Victorian Government issued invitations for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the Project's Principal Consultant (Architect) and EOIs for the Project's Engineering Consultant (Electrical and electronic engineering - (50%) and Mechanical engineering - (50%)). Both EOIs closed on 25 August.
Aug 2022 EOIs closed - Engineering Consultant.
Oct 2022 Early works commenced on the project.
Mar 2023 Advanced Tender Notice Opened - Managing Contractor
May 2023 The Victorian Government announced that Lyons Architecture has been appointed to design the new hospital.
May 2023 A new Community Consultative Committee (CCC) was established to ensure that ideas from the local area are incorporated into the final design. The scope of the CCC's input includes patient and family experience, family and outdoor spaces accessibility, and wayfinding.
Feb 2024 Built were awarded the contract to deliver the Barwon Womens and Childrens Hospital.
