Belmont Desalination

The Hunter Water Corporation has proposed the construction a new desalination plant to be located in Belmont, in the Lower Hunter Region.

The deslination plant would have the capacity to produce 30 million litres of drinking water per day - appoximately 15 per cent of the region's average daily water demand.

The scope of the project will include:

  • seawater intakes
  • water treament process plant
  • brine disposal system
  • power supply, and
  • ancillary facilities.

PROJECT HISTORY

2014 Drought response desalination was proposed in the 2014 Lower Hunter Water Plan.
Jul 2021 The NSW Government granted the Belmont Desalination Plant approval.
Apr 2022 The 2022 Hunter Water Security Plan included the Belmont Desalination Plant and estimated its cost to be between $220 million and $250 million.
Jan 2024 The Hunter Water Corporation requested new approvals from the NSW Government to modify the Belmont Desalination Plant from a part time drought response operation, to a permanent water supply operation.
Aug 2024 The NSW Government approved the modification of the project to operate on a permanent basis.
Oct 2024 John Holland was awarded the contract to deliver the project.
