Bungama Battery Project

The Bungama Battery, being developed by Risen Energy, is a proposed energy storage system which comprises the development of a 250-megawatt (MW) / 500-megawatt hour (MWh) facility near Port Pirie in South Australia. 

The project is being delivered in two stages.

  • Stage One comprises a 150 MW / 300 MWh capacity, and
  • Stage Two comprises a 100 MW / 200 MWh capacity.

The project will include grid forming inverter technology with a new integration system. The development is to be located adjacent to the existing 275 kilovolt Bungama Substation.

Funding contributions

The project recieved an unspecified funding contribution from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to equip the asset with grid-forming inverter technology.

Financing

The project's debt financing is provided by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Institutional Bank, and Export Development Canada.

Successful Tenderer: Wärtsilä and Enerven
Procurement note:

Wärtsilä will supply the BESS and provide a long-term service agreement. Enerven has been contracted as the Balance of Plant contractor and maintenance provider.

PROJECT HISTORY

Feb 2022 Risen Energy announced the project and submitted a Development Application.
Dec 2022 The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced the project was one of eight Battery Energy Storage Systems which would receive funding through the ARENA’s Large Scale Battery Storage Funding Round.
Oct 2024 Amp Energy announced that Stage One of the project had commenced construction.
Feb 2025 Amp Energy announced that the project had reached financial close. The project's debt financing is provided by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Institutional Bank, and Export Development Canada.
