Cairns Regional Council is developing a new source to drinking water to meet the needs of Cairns' growing residential population.
Works on the project include:
- a water intake at the Mulgrave River, near the Desmond Trannore Bridge, Gordonvale
- a water treatment plant and water reservoirs on Council-owned land at Gordonvale, and
- a network of pipes to transport raw water to the treatment plant, and from the plant to residential properties.

Following flooding due to Tropical Cyclone Jasper in December 2023, Cairns Regional Council requested an additional $236 million in joint funding from the Federal and Queensland Governments. Council indicated this funding would be partly used to support construction of the project. It is unclear how the Council will fund the shortfall for this project if external funding is not provided. |
