Canberra Hospital Expansion

The Canberra Hospital Expansion will see the construction of the Surgical Procedures, Interventional Radiology and Emergency (SPIRE) Centre. The Centre will be located on the north-eastern side, between Hospital Road and Palmer Street.

The SPIRE will deliver:

  • 22 operating theatres, with separate theatres dedicated to elective and emergency surgeries
  • enhanced procedural, critical care and imaging facilities
  • 148 inpatient beds including 60 intensive care unit beds and 24 coronary care unit beds
  • 55 day surgery beds
  • 114 emergency treatment spaces
  • integrated radiology and medical imaging facilities, and
  • patient, carer and staff spaces for respite, learning and meeting.

PROJECT HISTORY

Jun 2017 In its 2017-18 budget, the ACT Government committed $236 million to the project over the forward estimates, including $6 million over two years to undertake planning, and $230 million for initial capital works and design.
Mar 2018 The request for Registrations of Interest for proof of concept design for SPIRE was issued.
Jun 2019 In the 2019-20 Budget, the ACT Government made a $54.8 million commitment to the project over the forward estimates with provisions made for the estimated construction costs unpublished.
Jul 2019 A Request for Tender was released for legal services for the project on behalf of Major Projects Canberra.
Nov 2019 A request for Expressions of Interests was released. An Approach to Market was also issued for demolition of building eight that forms part of enabling work for the SPIRE.
Mar 2020 The ACT Government announced Lendlease and Multiplex were shortlisted to progress to the Request for Tender phase.
May 2020 Request for Tender was issued for design and construction of building eight.
Aug 2020 The ACT Government selected Multiplex as the successful bidder, following an Early Contractor Involvement process.
Feb 2021 The 2020-21 ACT Budget provided $40.8 million toward the Canberra Hospital Expansion. Additional funding is expected to be provided under the $1.7 billion Infrastructure Investment Provisions package of the Budget following finalisation of commercial negotiations.
Jun 2021 The ACT Government signed the main design and construction contract with Multiplex.
Aug 2021 The project received planning approval.
Jun 2024 The 2024-25 ACT Budget allocated $43 million for FY2024-25 for implementation of the Canberra Hospital Master Plan and planning for the next stages. The estimated total cost of the project was increased to $661 million.
Aug 2024 The ACT Government announced the project had been completed, with the new Critical Services Building commencing operations.
