In the lead up to the 2019 NSW State election, the NSW Liberal-National Government committed $619 million to fund Stage 2 upgrades to the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

This brings total funding for the Westmead precinct to $1.6 billion. The NSW Government had previously committed $95 million to the Stage 1 redevelopment of the Children's Hospital at Westmead, that included a new children's emergency department and paediatric short stay units, and additional pharmacy and medical imaging facilities.

Redevelopment works for Westmead Hospital are now underway, after Multiplex was awarded the main works contract in 2017. The new acute services building is expected to be operational in 2020, and Stage 1 is scheduled for completion in 2022.

The Stage 2 redevelopment of the Children's Hospital will include building a new Paediatric Services Building and refurbishing existing facilities, including:

  • operating theatres
  • neonatal intensive care unit
  • paediatric intensive care unit
  • cancer services
  • pharmacy department
  • expansion of pathology services
  • mental health inpatient and ambulatory care, and
  • car parking.

The 2019-20 NSW Budget provided $8.2 million for Stage 2 in FY2019-20, with a final business case to be completed in 2020. Construction works on Stage 2 are expected to commence in 2022.
