Collie Battery

The Collie Battery is a proposed one-gigawatt / four-gigawatt hour Battery Energy Storage System. The project, being developed by Neoen, is to be located near Collie, WA, approximately 150 kilometres south of Perth, and will connect to the Western Electricity Market via the existing Shotts substation.

The project is expected to be delivered across five stages, including:

  • Stage One: 219-megawatt (MW) / 877-megawatt hours (MWh), and
  • Stage Two: 341-MW / 1,363-MWh battery project.

Details of the remaining stages are yet to be released.

Jul 2024 SCEE Electrical was awarded the $50 million contract for switchyard works, including construction of a 330 kV switchyard, substation, and ancillary buildings and equipment to connect the battery to Western Power's network.

Financing

In February 2024, Neoen announced the completion of a $1.1 billion debt financing package for a 1.5-gigawatt renewable energy portfolio made up of eight solar, wind, and battery assets. $700 million will see the refinancing of single-asset level debts, while the remainder will be used to finance the project. The debt syndicate comprised of ANZ, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, MUFG, Bank of China, Clean Energy Finance Corporation, China Construction Bank Corporation, HSBC, ING, Mizuho, Société Générale and Westpac.

PROJECT HISTORY

Jun 2023 UGL was awarded the contract to design and construct Stage One of the Collie BESS, and commenced construction. Stage One will have a capacity of 219 MW / 877 MWh.
Feb 2024 Neoen completed the debt financing of a diversified renewable energy portfolio of eight wind, solar and battery storage assets, raising $1.1 billion. The first new asset financed through this packaged debt is Collie Battery Stage One.
Oct 2024 Neoen announced that Stage One of the battery has been completed and commenced operations.

In December 2024, Neoen announced the completion of a $1.4 billion debt financing package for a 1.3-gigawatt renewable energy portfolio made up of seven solar, wind, and battery assets, including the Collie Battery - Stage Two. The debt syndicate comprised ANZ, Bank of China, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, The Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, ING, KfW IPEX-Bank, Mizuho, MUFG, SMBC, Societe Generale and Westpac.

Apr 2024 Neoen announced that AEMO has awarded a second capacity services contract for the Collie Battery with a 300-MW / 1,363-MWh capacity. UGL has been awarded the construction and installation contract, and Tesla the supply of 348 Megapack 2 XL units.
May 2024 Neoen announced the commencement of construction on Stage Two.
Dec 2024 Neoen has announced the completion of a second tranche of portfolio debt financing, raising $1.4 billion for an additional 1.3 gigawatts of Australian solar, wind and battery assets. The new debt raised will finance the 341-megawatt / 1,363-megawatt-hour Collie Battery Stage Two.
