Garden Island (East) Critical Infrastructure Recovery Project

The Garden Island Defence Precinct is located between Woolloomooloo Bay and Elizabeth Bay, approximately two kilometres north-east of Sydney’s central business district. The Critial Infrastructure Recovery Project aims to improve the condition of engineering services and wharf structures across the Garden Island Defence Precinct, and is being delivered across two stages.

Stage One has a total estimated cost of $263 million and involves providing a fully functioning and future-proofed wharf at the north-west end of the precinct capable of berthing and facilitating work on all current and future planned RAN ships. This includes:

  • the demolition of the existing Cruiser Wharf and Oil Wharf
  • construction a new realigned wharf in their place, and
  • extending the adjoining East Dock Wall to limit the new realigned wharf’s protrusion into Sydney Harbour.

Stage Two has a total estimated cost of $287 million and will address critical condition, capacity and compliance issues with some Garden Island Defence Precinct wharves, as well as base-wide engineering services, including:

  • base electrical supply, fuel supply, sewerage infrastructure, potable water, and compressed air, and
  • upgrade works to West Dock Wharf, East Dock Wharf and Fleet Base East.
