The Gnarwarre Battery project is a proposed lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 250 megawatts / 500 megawatt hours, to be located in Gnarwarre, Victoria approximately 20 kilometres west of Geelong.

Financing

The project is financed under the portfolio financing facility closed by FRV Australia in July 2024. The project financing has been provided by a syndicate of 5 financial institutions: Westpac Banking Corporation, United Overseas Bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, KfW IPEX-Bank and Export Development Canada.

PROJECT HISTORY

2021 Fotowatio Renewable Ventures Australia (FRV) acquired the project from Ace Energy.
Jul 2022 The project was shortlisted to receive funding under ARENA's Large Scale Battery Storage Funding Round.
Dec 2022 FRV was awarded conditional funding from ARENA for the project.
Aug 2025 FRV Australia announced that the project had reached financial close, financed under the portfolio financing facility closed in July 2024.
Aug 2025 Main works construction commenced on the project, with completion forecast for late 2027.
