Herne Bay Collector

The Herne Bay Collector project will connect to the Central Interceptor project and direct wastewater and stormwater to the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project’s scope of works comprises:

  • a 2.1-metre diameter, 1.7-kilometre wastewater tunnel, delivered at a depth between nine and 22 metres
  • seven main shafts
  • three intermediate shafts to connect to existing network infrastructure
  • overflow connections to existing engineered overflow points, and
  • a control chamber at Pt Erin Park, which will connect the Herne Bay Collector into the Central Interceptor.

Jan 2026 Watercare announced that Ghella had commenced early works on the project.
May 2026 Watercare has awarded Ghella a contract to design and construct the Herne Bay Collector wastewater tunnel project. The project comprises the delivery of a 2.1-metre diameter, 1.7-kilometre wastewater tunnel, delivered at a depth between nine and 22 metres.
