Kurnell Battery Energy Storage System

The Kurnell Battery Energy Storage System is a proposed 800-megawatt (MW) / 3.8-gigawatt hour storage project to be located in Kurnell, NSW.

The project is proposed to be delivered in stages, including:

  • Stage One: approximately 250 MW, and
  • Stage Two: approximately 550 MW.

The project will connect to Ausgrid’s existing 132-kilovolt Kurnell South Zone Substation

PROJECT HISTORY

Nov 2023 Kurnell Energy submitted a Scoping Report and requested the Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) for the project. The Scoping Report set out the proposed scope for the project, including a 800-megawatt / 3.8-gigawatt hour battery to be delivered over two stages.
Dec 2023 The SEARs were issued for the project.
Apr 2025 Ampol submitted an updated Scoping report to the NSW Major Project Portal. The report outlines updates to the project, including rezoned land for industrial use.
Jul 2025 The NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure issued updated SEARs for the project.
