Kwinana Waste to Energy Project

The Kwinana Waste to Energy project is a waste processing facility, owned and operated by ACCIONA, which uses moving grate technology to process approximately 400,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste, commercial and industrial waste and pre-sorted construction and demolition waste per annum to produce approximately 36 megawatts of baseload power for export to the grid.

The project is located in Kwinana, Western Australia, approximately 40 kilometres south of Perth CBD.

Funding contributions

Federal Government

On behalf of the Australian Government, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced $23 million in funding to develop an Australian-first energy-from-waste project in Western Australia which will reduce waste going to landfill.

PROJECT HISTORY

Oct 2018 ARENA announced the project and the commencement of construction.
Mar 2024 ACCIONA acquired 100 per cent ownership of the project, in an agreement reached with Macquarie Capital and Dutch Infrastructure Fund.
Jun 2024 It was announced that the project would be commissioned from the week commencing 17 June, with operations expected to commence from July 2024.
