Limondale Solar Farm and BESS

The Limondale Solar Farm consists of a 249-megawatt solar farm consisting approximately 872,000 panels in Balranald, NSW which commenced operations in 2021. 

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is proposed to be developed beside the existing solar farm with 50-megawatt / 400-megawatt hour capacity. 

The Solar Farm and BESS are located within the South-West REZ.

The Limondale Solar Farm, developed by RWE, is a 315 megawatt (MW) solar PV farm located near Balranald, NSW. The scope of the project included delivery of 870,000 solar PV panels, with a maximum generation capacity of 315 MW.

The project is located within the South-West Renewable Energy Zone.

Oct 2016 A request for SEARs was lodged with the NSW Department of Planning.
Nov 2016 The NSW Department of Planning issued SEARs for the project.
Apr 2017 The project's Environmental Impact Statement was published.
Dec 2018 RWE announced the start of construction on the project.
Sep 2020 Main works reached completion, with the project progressing to testing and comissioning phases.
Sep 2021 The project reached the completion of comissioning, with all stages of the solar farm operational.

The Limondale BESS, developed by RWE, is a 50 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage system, located adjacent to the Limondale Solar Farm near Balranald, NSW. The scope of the project includes delivery of 144 Tesla megapack batteries and connecting infrastructure. 

The project is located within the South-West Renewable Energy Zone.

PROJECT HISTORY

Mar 2022 RWE submitted a modification report for the development of the BESS project to the NSW Department of Planning.
Oct 2022 The NSW Department of Planning and Environment granted development approval for the modification.
May 2023 The BESS project was awarded a long-duration storage Long-Term Energy Service Agreement by AEMO Services under the inaugural tender round for new generation and long-duration storage electricity infrastructure in New South Wales. The project remains subject to normal planning approval processes.
May 2024 RWE announced it had reached final investment decision to build the BESS component of the project, located next to the Limondale Solar Farm, and announced its expected construction dates, commencing in late-2024 and completing in late-2025. Beon Energy Solutions also announced it had been awarded the engineering procurement and construction contract, with Tesla to supply the battery components.
Sep 2025 RWE announced the project had successfully been registered with the Australian Energy Market Operator.
