Logan Hospital Expansion

The Logan Hospital Expansion is being delivered in two stages. Stage One includes:

  • an additional 206 beds and treatment spaces
  • a vertical expansion of Building Three (emergency department building), delivering four new floors
  • building-in of the ground floor of Building Three, and
  • refurbishment of clinical, clinical support and operational service support areas in the other existing hospital buildings.

Stage Two includes:

  • a new clinical services building known as Building Four
  • 112 additional beds, and
  • new operating theatres.

Other works to the hospital include:

  • a new $18.8 million maternity service
  • a new $61.9 million eight-level car park, and
  • refurbishment of existing clinical and support areas in other buildings.

Jun 2019 In its 2019-20 Budget the Queensland Government allocated $7.5 million for FY2019-20 and $30 million in FY2020-21 towards the project. The remaining funding will be spent between FY2021-22 and FY2022-23.
Jun 2020 The Queensland Government released the Invitation to Offer (ITO) to companies shortlisted during the expression of interest process.
Nov 2020 In its 2020-21 Budget, the Queensland Government allocated $20 million towards the project for FY2020-21.
Jun 2021 In its 2021-22 Budget, the Queensland Government allocated $80 million to the project for FY2021-22.
2021 Construction on Stage 1 commenced.

The Logan Hospital Expansion Stage Two will delivery:

  • an additional 112 beds to the existing facility
  • ten additional operating theatres
  • six endoscopy rooms
  • chemotherapy spaces, and
  • three catheterisation laboratories.

The expansion will include a new, seven-storey building between Block 3 the new car park developed during Stage One.

This project is part of Queensland's Capacity Expansion Program.

Procurement note:

The project is being procured as a part of the Queensland Government's Capacity Expansion Program (CEP). The CEP will deliver $9.8 billion worth of new and upgraded hospitals across 15 separate projects. CEP projects are being procured using a Pre-Qualified Panel model. Under the model, interested parties submit EOIs outlinining the list of projects or ‘bundles of projects’ they wish to participate in. Contractors successfully appointed to the panel will then be selected to participate in a Request for Tenders (RFT) phase for particular projects, or packages of projects.

The contract is being delivered through a Managing Contractor model, where John Holland will be required to deliver designs for the project by mid-2024 and must deliver a ‘value for money guaranteed construction price’, for the project prior to the main works construction phase. Detailed project scopes will be announced following completion of detailed designs next year.

Jun 2022 The project was announced under Queensland's Capacity Expansion Program.
Oct 2022 Funding was confirmed for the project and the Queensland Government called for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to join a prequalified panel to deliver Capacity Expansion Program projects.
May 2023 The Queensland Government awarded the managing contractor contract to deliver the project to John Holland.
Sep 2024 The project cost has increased from $530 million to $875 million following the design phase due to scope modifications, cost escalations and to account for complexity. The Government has stated the cost increases will be covered through the existing $11.2 billion Program allocation. This includes an additional $1 billion in "equity funding" allocated to the Program in the 2024-25 Queensland Budget.
