Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre upgrades

A new secondary treatment process will be delivered at the Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre to upgrade the plant's treatment capacity.

The scope of works includes the construction of a new membrane bioreactor with a treatment capacity of 97 megalitres of wastewater a day.

The full project scope includes the delivery of a:

  • plant bypass and return system
  • new secondary treatment process including fine screening, bioreactors, membrane bioreactor tanks, membrane permeate storage, chemical dosing systems, blowers, and waste-activated sludge management systems
  • non-potable water system to pump membrane permeate into the existing non-potable water infrastructure at LMWQCC for on-site process use
  • sodium hypochlorite dosing system, replacing and increasing capacity for the existing dosing system at the site.
  • pre-treatment screening and screenings management, and
  • grit removal and grit management process.

PROJECT HISTORY

May 2023 The Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission released its final determination for Icon Water's water and wastewater service maximum pricing. The determination provided for $528 million in capital investment for the Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre.
Dec 2024 Icon Water announced the signing of a long-term contract with Seymour Whyte and VINCI Construction Grands Projets to support its $1 billion 10-year Major Projects Delivery Program. Additionally, a JV between Beca HunterH2O and GHD was selected to provide engineering services for the delivery program. The upgrades to the LMWQCC are the first project as part of the Major Projects Delivery Program
