PROJECT HISTORY

Apr 2025 The Independent Review of the Capacity Expansion Program was released and identified significant cost escalations to the project. The review recommended the termination of the Stage 1 MC contract to allow Health Infrastructure Queensland to engage design consultants to develop a clinically prioritised scope for the project. It also recommended the adoption of a revised procurement strategy, including the adoption of a staged delivery and early delivery of urgent clinical works.
Apr 2025 The Queensland Government released a response to the Independent Review of the Capacity Expansion Program. The Government did not accept recommendations of the review, instead opting to investigate solutions for the Mackay Hospital Expansion with the incumbent contractor.
Aug 2026 The Queensland Government released the masterplan for Stage One of the Mackay Base Hospital Expansion. Stage One is expected to include wxpanded emergency, maternity, birthing, surgical, endoscopy, neonatal and paediatric services, a new Mackay Birth Centre, a new multi-story car park, and a rooftop helipad. Future stages of the project are yet to be confirmed.
