The Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation (MAPT) project will be delivered over two phases, comprising new public gardens, new contemporary art gallery, pedestrian connections, underground shared services, and new and upgraded theatre and art facilities.
MAPT Phase One - Northern Package will be awarded in multiple stages. The scope of works for the Northern Package primary contract will include:
- the restoration and upgrades to the Art Centre Melbourne State Theatre for new seating and flooring, new lifts, and wheelchair positions in stalls
- the delivery of two new hospitality spaces in the western and northern facades of the Theatres building
- expanding the Loading Dock, and
- building a new rehearsal studio.
Additional works, as part of MAPT Phase One - Northern Package will include:
- The Fox: NGV Contemporary, a new modern art and design gallery
- a new 18,000 square metre urban garden, and
- new connections into and through the precinct.

| Nov 2021 | Expressions of Interest opened for the Northern Package, closing on 31 January 2022. An industry briefing was to be held on 9 December 2021. |
| Apr 2022 | The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) received a $100 million donation from Lindsay Fox AC and Paula Fox AO towards the construction of NGV Contemporary. The NGV Contemporary will be renamed to The Fox: NGV Contemporary. |
| May 2022 | The Victorian Government awarded Lendlease the early works contract. |
| Jul 2022 | Early works on commenced on the project. |
| Apr 2023 | Lendlease was awarded the main works primary contract for the MAPT Phase One - Northern Package. |
