Melton Line Upgrade

The Melton Line Upgrade is an upgrade to existing rail infrastructure in West Melbourne. The scope of the project includes enhanced stabling works and improved stations to accomodate nine-car Vlocity Trains.

The project includes:

  • a new Melton Station with four platforms with pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, pick-up and drop-off zones, and lifts and stairs to each platform
  • new rail bridges over Coburns and Exford Road, and
  • new road over rail bridges at Ferris Road and Hoplins Road.

The project scope includes investigation into a new train stabling facility at Cobblebank.

PROJECT HISTORY

May 2023 The Victorian Government announced the project in the 2023-24 Budget at a cost of $641 million, but did not commit any general government expenditure for FY2023-24.
Mar 2024 Concept designs were released for the new Melton Station. The designs include four platforms, pedestrian walkways, cycling paths, pick-up and drop-off zones, and lifts and stairs to each platform. An air-conditioned waiting room and staffed ticket office will be built and a new multi-bay bus interchange. An updated cost estimate of $650 million was confirmed.
