Melton Line Upgrade

The Melton Line Upgrade includes an upgrade to existing rail infrastructure in West Melbourne. The scope of the project includes enhanced stabling works and improved stations to accomodate nine-car Vlocity Trains, and the delivery of a new station at Melton.

The progress of this project is reliant on the removal of four level crossings along the line, as part of the Melton Level Crossing Removals project.

PROJECT HISTORY

Mar 2023 The Victorian Government announced the project in the 2023-24 Budget at a cost of $641 million, but did not commit any general government expenditure for FY2023-24.
Nov 2025 The Victorian Government has awarded the contract to deliver the project to an alliance comprising John Holland, Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) and Metro Trains Melbourne. The project will see the extension of platforms at Cobblebank, Rockbank, Caroline Springs and Deer Park stations and construction of a new stabling yard at Cobblebank, near the new Melton station being constructed as part of the Melton Level Crossing Removals – Package two, and delivered by the same alliance.
May 2026 The Federal Government announced that construction had commenced on a new train stabling yard at Cobblebank as part of the Melton Line Upgrade.
