Mount Piper Battery Energy Storage System

The Mount Piper Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, proposed by EnergyAustralia, would comprise the development of 500 megawatt / 2,000 megawatt hour BESS. The project would be located approximately 25 kilometres from Lithgow in NSW.

Proposed infrastructure components include:

  • battery modules
  • a substation comprising two transformers
  • other high voltage infrastructure, and
  • ancillary infrastructure features including temporary construction and laydown areas, extension to existing internal access roads and installtion of a concrete platform for the BESS modules. 

Project construction may be staged depending on market conditions and site constraints, with both stages comprising 250 MW / 1,000 MWh.

PROJECT HISTORY

Nov 2022 The NSW Department of Planning and Environment published EnergyAustralia's Request for the Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements and Scoping Report for the project.
Dec 2022 The NSW Department of Planning and Environment Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements were issued for the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement of the project.
May 2024 The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project was published and placed on public exhibition, closing on 27 June 2024.
Nov 2024 The NSW Government granted development approval to the project. The approved Assessment Report provided a total estimated cost of $1 billion and expected construction timeframe of 18 to 24 months.
