Next Generation Trams

The Victorian Government's Next Generation Trams project will see:

  • the delivery of 100 Next Generation Trams for Melbourne's Tram network, and
  • the establishment of a tram maintenance and stabling facility on a vacant site in Maidstone near Highpoint Shopping Centre in Melbourne's west.

Victorian Government

In its 2020-21 Budget, the Victorian government committed $1.5 billion for the project. The 2021-22 Victorian Budget allocated an additional $368 million to deliver enabling infrastructure for the project, including a new tram maintenance facility in Melbourne's north west.

PROJECT HISTORY

Sep 2019 Victorian Government announced that it will purchase 100 Next Generation Trams, with manufacturing to occur within the state. Victorian Government also invited manufacturers to develop proposals and participate in a collaborative design process.
May 2020 The Department of Transport, Victoria issued Request for proposals for shortlisted bidders. The shortlist was not publicly disclosed by the Government.
Nov 2020 In the Victorian 2020-21 Budget, the Government committed $1.48 billion for the project.
May 2021 The Victorian Department of Transport issued Request for Proposals to shortlisted bidders to design, build and maintain the new trams. The Department did not publicly disclose the shortlist.
May 2021 The 2021-22 Victorian Budget allocated an additional $368 million to deliver enabling infrastructure for the project, including a new tram maintenance facility in Melbourne's north west. The Budget indicated the estimated completion of the project as June 2029.
Aug 2021 The Victorian Government announced a site in Maidstone near Highpoint Shopping Centre in Melbourne will be used to build the tram maintenance and stabling facility as part of the fleet procurement. The Victorian Government also announced that the contract to design, build, and maintain the trams will be awarded in early 2022.
Apr 2022 The Victorian Government awarded Alstom the contract to deliver the project.
Apr 2023 The Victorian Government released the designs for the Tram Maintenance and Stabling facility in Maidstone.
Jun 2023 The Victorian Government awarded John Holland the Alliance Contract to deliver the new maintenance facility in Maidstone.
