Northern Hospital Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit Redevelopment

The Victorian Government is funding the Northern Hospital Redevelopment in Epping in Melbourne's north suburbs. This project includes construction of a new emergency department and inpatient tower at the hospital. Works will include:

  • a dedicated paediatrics zone
  • a mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub, including an acute behaviour treatment space, and
  • additional in-patient beds.

The project will increase the number of treatment spaces for emergency patients at the Northern Hospital to almost 200.

PROJECT HISTORY

May 2023 The 2023-24 Victorian budget allocated $320 million from the Hospital Infrastructure Delivery Fund to support planning and development activities for investment in seven new, redeveloped and refurbished hospitals across Victoria, including the Northern Hospital Redevelopment.
May 2024 The Victorian Government allocated $813 million in the 2024-25 Budget to deliver the project. The $813 million includes $123 million in funding from the Hospital Infrastructure Delivery Fund in the previous budget, which was used for planning. It also includes $17 million from the ‘Building emergency departments kids and families can count on' initiative.
Jul 2024 The Victorian Health Building Authority opened Expressions of Interest for Stage Two main works on July 1, including the new Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit tower, with EOIs closing on 2 August 2024.
