North and Far North Queensland has three potential REZs:
Farn North Queensland REZ
- 500 - 700 megawatts (MW) of expected generation
- Under development
Collinsville REZ
- 1,600 - 2,000 MW of expected generation
- Mid-late 2020s
Flinders REZ
- 2,000 - 2,400 MW of expected generation
- Mid-late 2020s
None of the REZs have been officially declared.
REZs that are in-flight are already progressing under the existing National Electricity Rules with a foundation project in development.

PROJECT HISTORY
Aug 2020 | The Queensland Government committed $145 million to support network upgrades and streamline the development of new renewable generation projects in the Renewable Energy Zones. |
Sep 2020 | The Queensland Government opened Registrations of Interest for renewable energy generations and storage projects in the REZ, closing on 25 September. |
May 2021 | The Queensland Government allocated $40 million to upgrade existing transmission lines for the Kaban Green Power Hub project and the broader Northern Queensland Renewable Energy Zone. |
Aug 2021 | The Queensland Government also announced there were 53 projects that registered interest in the Northern QREZ. |
Jul 2023 | The Queensland Government released the draft 2023 Queensland Renewable Energy Zone Roadmap which identified the three potential future REZs North and Far North Queensland. |
Mar 2024 | The Queensland Government released the final Queensland Renewable Energy Zone Roadmap. |
