Northwestern Bus Improvements

The project aims to deliver short-term upgrades to improve public transport travel time and reliability for trips to and from northwest Auckland. The improvements proposed over the next five years include:

  • a new station at Westgate 
  • interim bus stops at the Lincoln Road and Te AtatÅ« motorway interchanges
  • upgrading and extending bus shoulder lanes on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16)
  • improvements at motorway interchanges to increase priority for buses, and
  • a review of the bus network to utilise the new bus stops.

PROJECT HISTORY

Jul 2020 The New Zealand Government confirmed NZ$100 million for improvements to the North Western Motorway, as part of its infrastructure stimulus program.
Nov 2020 Auckland Transport issued an Advance Notice announcing that it intends to release a Request for Proposal (RFP) process for the Detailed Design Package One of Northwestern Bus Improvements project.
May 2021 Auckland Transport issued the tender for the Westgate Station Design Phase of the project.
Jul 2021 Construction commenced.
Sep 2021 The 2021-24 National Land Transport Programme allocated $17 million to the project.
Dec 2022 Submissions closed for feedback on planned extensions and new bus-only lanes on SH16 to be implemented by bylaw as part of the Northwestern Bus Improvements project
Nov 2023 The NZ Government announced the project had reached construction completion, with the new bus network commencing operations on 12 November.
