Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro

The proposed Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro project would have a five-gigawatt, 24-hour storage capacity and be located in the Pioneer Valley, 70 kilometres west of Mackay.

The project is being developed by the Queensland Government-owned Queensland Hydro.

PROJECT HISTORY

Sep 2022 The Queensland Government announced the project.
Nov 2022 The Queensland Government opened Expressions of Interest to investigate feasibility of the project. EOIs are being sought for companies with experience in environmental, geotechnical, or accommodation services, closing 14 December.
Jan 2023 Queensland Hydro is seeking Expressions of Interest for consultancy services to develop a front-end engineering design for the project, closing 31st January.
Feb 2023 The Queensland Government opened Expressions of Interest for consultancy services to develop the Cost Estimate for the project, closing 2nd March.
Mar 2023 The Queensland Government opened Request for Tenders for a Standing Offer Arrangement for drilling contractors to perform shallow geotechnical drilling for the project, closing 14th April.
Mar 2023 The Queensland Government opened Request for Tenders for the project's Geotechnical Lead, closing 21st April.
Jun 2023 Queensland Hydro awarded the Front-End Engineering and Design contract for the project to the Water2Wire Joint Venture comprising GHD, Mott MacDonald and Stantec. The first geotechnical drilling contract for the project was also awarded to Twin Hills Engineering and Drilling.
Oct 2023 Queensland Hydro has issued a Request for Tender for EIS delivery and strategic advisory services for the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro and Borumba Pumped Hydro projects.
