Port Pirie Hydrogen Plant

Trafigura are proposing the construction of a 525 MW green hydrogen production plant at the Port Pirie industrial Precinct. 

The plant would be constructed in two stages with the first stage seeing an 85 MW electrolyser constructed. The hydrogen prodcued by the plant would supply both the domestic market and be converted to ammonia for export. 

The second stage would see a 440 MW electrolyser constructed. 

The oxygen created in the electrolysis process is intended for use by the Port Pirie smelter.

PROJECT HISTORY

Dec 2021 Trafigura and the South Australian Government announced a $5 million Front End Engineering Design study for the project, with costs to be shared on a 50:50 basis.
