Prince of Wales Hospital - New Acute Services Building

The new Acute Services Building is a $870 million project that is Stage One the Randwick Campus Redvelopment. The Acute Service Building is a 13-storey building that covers approximately 55,000 square metres of gross floor area. It also includes direct connections via two link bridges to the existing Prince of Wales Hospital and Royal Hospital for Women.

The new acute services building will be located to the west of the existing Randwick Hospital's campus and include:

  • an expanded adult emergency department
  • an expanded psychiatric emergency care centre
  • an expanded intensive care unit
  • a new rapid assessment unit and virtual care centre
  • new inpatient wards and additional patient beds
  • four new digital operating theatres
  • an expanded central sterilising service department and new helipad
  • teaching, education and research spaces, and
  • expanded ambulatory care facilities.

The project was delivered by Health Infrastructure NSW in consultation with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, Sydney Children's Hospitals Network and the University of New South Wales.

Funding contributions

NSW Government
University of NSW

The NSW contributed an additional $82.5 million for fit-out works in June 2022, including including additional operating theatres, an ICU pod and two additional wards. This brought the total NSW Government funding to $869.822 million.

The University of NSW contributed an additional $62.8 million for an extension to the Acute Services Building, incorporating UNSW health-related education, training and research activities with clinical services.

Mar 2015 $500 million NSW Government commitment.
Mar 2017 Final business case submitted to NSW Government.
Jun 2017 Concept design released.
Jun 2017 Additional $220 million funding commitment from NSW Government.
Oct 2018 Early works commenced, involving: - Establishment of the site and installation of hoarding - Demolition of 92 buildings and ancillary structures - Removal of trees and vegetation - Site remediation and removal of top soil - Utility relocations and upgrade - Set up of site and worker facilities
Feb 2019 The State Significant Development application for the project was approved by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.
Aug 2019 Lendlease awarded main works contract.
Jun 2022 The NSW contributed an additional $82.5 million for fit-out works, including including additional operating theatres, an ICU pod and two additional wards. This brought the total NSW Government funding to $869.822 million.
Nov 2022 Lendlease completed major construction on the Prince of Wales Acute Services Building. The new building is expected to open to patients in early 2023.
Mar 2023 The first services move to the Acute Services Building from the Prince of Wales Hospital. The new building opened in stages, with the Respiratory & Infectious Diseases and Haematology & Oncology wards the first to move.
May 2023 The Prince of Wales Hospital Emergency Department officially moved to the new Acute Services Building.
