METRONET - Railcar Program (Acquisition and Replacement)

The WA Railcar Program will deliver 246 new C-series railcars to service new METRONET projects, replacing the older A-series trains. The Program is split into two key components: 

  • Railcar Acquisition Program – procurement of additional rolling stock to service new METRONET lines.

  • Railcar Replacement Program – replacement of ageing A-series railcars used on existing Transperth lines.

 

Funding contributions

WA Government

The Railcar Acquisition program has increased from $488 million to $511 million, with $94 million allocated in FY2025-26. Meanwhile, the Railcar Replacement program has increased by $4 million to $945 million, with $130 million allocated in FY2025-26.

PROJECT HISTORY

Apr 2018 Procurement commenced for the main contract for the Railcar Acquisition and Replacement project. The $1.6 billion project is expected to deliver 246 new Railcars over a ten year timeframe.
Aug 2018 A shortlist for the contract to deliver the future fleet was announced, comprising Alstom Transport, EDI Rail, and Momentum West
May 2019 Aurecon was awarded the design contract for the new maintenence and assembly facility.
Sep 2019 Procurement commenced for a contract to deliver a new maintenence and assembly facility.
Dec 2019 Alstom was awarded the contract to deliver the future C-Series Railcar Fleet over a ten year timeframe.
Dec 2020 METRONET WA announced that construction had commenced on the Bellevue Railcar Manufacturing and Assembly Facility. FIRM Construction was awarded the $46 million contract for the delivery of the facility.
Jun 2021 Construction finished on the Bellevue Railcar Manufacturing and Assembly Facility
Jun 2022 The first full six-car C-series train built in Western Australia commenced live testing.
Jun 2025 The 2025-26 WA Budget confirmed the Railcar Acquisition program has increased from $488 million to $511 million, with $94 million allocated in FY2025-26. Additionally, the Railcar Replacement program has increased by $4 million to $945 million, with $130 million allocated in FY2025-26.
