Macquarie Point Stadium

The Macquarie Point Stadium (formally named the Regatta Point Multi Purpose Stadium) is a proposed multi-purpose stadium at Macquarie Point, on the foreshore of Hobart.

The new stadium will have capacity of up to 23,000 seats, a 1,500-person function room, a retractable roof, and will be designed to Australian Football League specifications. 

The stadium is intended to be located within a new Arts, Entertainment and Sports Precinct in Macquarie Point, Hobart. 

The stadium includes:

  • a stage pocket in the northern stand to support concerts and events
  • a single continuous concourse that services the whole stadium
  • a seating bowl design, and
  • separated back of house and catering facilities with a below ground service road to separate vehicles and stadium visitors and users.

PROJECT HISTORY

Mar 2022 Tasmania Government announced the project, subject to approval of an AFL licence for a Tasmanian team.
Apr 2023 The Tasmanian Government announced that the Federal Government would invest $240 million under the 2023-24 Federal Budget for the stadium, alongside an existing $375 million commitment committed by the Tasmanian Government
Apr 2023 The Tasmanian Government announced following funding commitments for the stadium that they would develop an updated precinct plan for the Macquarie Point Precinct with the stadium at its core.
May 2023 The 2023-24 Tasmanian Budget allocated $230 million over the next four years to the Macquarie Point Urban Renewal program, including $15 million in FY2023-24.
Oct 2023 The Tasmanian Government released the draft precinct plan for the Macquarie Point Draft Precinct Plan for public consultation, closing on 26 November.
Oct 2023 The Tasmanian Parliament's Lower House approved an Order to designate the project as a project of State Significance.
Nov 2023 The Tasmanian Government granted a Project of State Significance Order for the Stadium. Tasmanian Planning Commission will now undertake an integrated assessment of the project an potential environmental, social, and economic impacts.
Jan 2024 The Tasmanian Government has issued several Request for Tenders (RFTs) related to the proposed $715 million Macquarie Point Stadium. The first RFT is for a Lead Design Consultant to provide architectural and engineering design services for the construction of the stadium structure, public concourse and ancillary structures. The second RFT is for a Project Management Consultant for the project, and the third RFT is for a Transport Study to assess movement- and transport-related needs for the Macquarie Point Precinct as part of the broader assessment for the stadium. All RFTs close 28 February.
Feb 2024 The Tasmanian Government issued a Request for Tender for planning consultancy services. The scope includes implementation of the Macquarie Point Precinct Plan through the development of an updated Master Plan and assistance with an application for the stadium as a Project of State Significance, with tenders closing on 6 March 2024.
May 2024 The Tasmanian Government issued a Request for Tender for a Construction Advisor to support the Lead Design Consultant on the project, closing 22 May.
May 2024 COX Architecture was appointed the Lead Design Consultant to design the stadium. They have brought on a team that includes AECOM, Cumulus Studio, Cova, Aldanmark, Pitt & Sherry, and Schlaich Bergermann Partners.
Jul 2024 The Tasmanian Government released concept designs for the new stadium, confirming the stadium has a proposed capacity of up to 23,000 seats and is expected to include a 1,500-person function room.
