The Regional Rail Fleet Replacement project will see new rolling stock delivered to replace NSW's entire regional rail fleet that services Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and regional centres in NSW.
The regional fleet currently comprises:
- the Express Passenger Train (XPT) fleet, which includes 60 passenger cars plus 19 diesel locomotives;
- 23 XPLORER passenger cars; and
- 28 Endeavour passenger cars.
In total the program will deliver:
- 10 regional intercity trains (30 carriages in three car sets),
- 9 shorter regional trains (27 carriages in three car sets), and
- 10 long regional trains (60 carriages in six car sets).
A new rail maintenance facility in Dubbo will also be delivered under the program. The trains will be Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs).
