Rolleston Access Improvements

A new bridge will be constructed over State Highway 1 at Rolleston to connect the township with surrounding business and industrial areas. The project will also improve safety and travel reliability along a key section of the Canterbury transport network.

The scope of the project includes:

  • a new, two-lane roundabout at the SH1 and Dunns Crossing/Walkers Road intersection with a pedestrian and cycling underpass

  • a new bridge over SH1 linking Rolleston township and the industrial precinct between Rolleston Drive North and Jones Road

  • removal of the two existing signalised intersections at Hoskyns Road and Rolleston Drive North

  • extension of the southbound motorway lanes to just south of the new bridge

  • a southbound service lane and off-ramp to Rolleston town centre and adjacent businesses

  • left-in left-out treatments at Rolleston Drive South, Brookside Road and Tennyson Street intersections

  • upgrades to the Hoskyns Road rail level crossing

  • improvements at the Weedons Road interchange

Funding contributions

NZ Government

The project is fully funded by the New Zealand Government through Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency as part of the Roads of Regional Significance program. The estimated cost is NZD $180-200 million, including contingencies.

PROJECT HISTORY

Apr 2021 Project design and planning commenced under Waka Kotahi as part of the Roads of Regional Significance program.
Jul 2025 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency issued a Request for Tender for the Stage One physical works contract, covering construction of a new roundabout, road realignment, interchange efficiency improvements, and rail crossing upgrades.
