The new Shellharbour Hospital aims to meet increased demand for health services in the Southern Illawarra region. The new seven-storey hospital will be constructed on a greenfield site in Dunmore NSW and is expected to comprise:
- an Emergency Department
- specialised elective surgery services
- rehabilitation and aged care services
- acute medical services
- mental health services
- drug and alcohol unit
- renal dialysis
- outpatient care services, and
- carparking.
The project is being delivered by NSW Health Infrastructure, in partnership with the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.

PROJECT HISTORY
2019 | Early works commenced on redevelopment of existing Shellharbour Hospital. |
Sep 2020 | The NSW Government committed a further $320 million to the proposed Shellharbour Hospital Redevelopment in addition to the $251 million previously committed to the project, as part of its COVID-19 Recovery Plan. |
Nov 2020 | Site selection commenced, with the NSW Government calling for proposals from landowners of suitable greenfield sites until 4 December 2020. |
May 2021 | The NSW Government announced the site for the new hospital. It will be built on a greenfield site on Dunmore Road, Dunmore. |
Jun 2021 | The 2021-22 NSW Budget allocated $40 million to the project for FY2021-22. |
Jun 2022 | The FY2022-23 NSW Budget allocated $29 million to the project in FY2022-23. The Budget also identified an increase of $22 million in the project's total estimated cost. The total cost is now $722 million. |
Nov 2022 | The NSW Government released the concept designs for the new Shellharbour Hospital. |
Apr 2023 | The Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) were issued for the project. |
Sep 2023 | The project's Environmental Impact Statement was placed on open exhibition, closing on 12 October. |
Nov 2023 | The NSW Government released updated procurement and delivery timelines for the project in the 2023-24 State Infrastructure Plan. Procurement for the project is scheduled to commence by the end of 2023. The contract is expected to be awarded by in early 2024, with construction to commence in the first quarter of 2024. |
