Stage One of the Papakura ki Pukekura - Papakura to Bombay will widen the motorway to three lanes in each direction between Papakura and Drury.
The scope of the works includes:
- 4.5 kilometres of new traffic lanes
- widened shoulders to enable future bus services
- four kilometres of new paths for people walking and cycling
- interchange improvements at Papakura, including a new southbound on-ramp
- interchange improvements at Drury, enabling rail electrification, and
- improved safety barriers, lighting and noise mitigation.
The project has been divided into three stages:
- Stage 1A - Upgrades to SH1 between Papakura and Otūwairoa/Slippery Creek
- Stage 1B1 - Active transport path between Papakura and Drury alongside the northbound lane of SH1, rebuilding the Papkura Interchange to enable the electrification of the Papakura to Pukekohe rail line, and
- Stage 1B2 - New Otūwairoa/Slippery Creek bridge.

Stage 1B1 physical works were expected to begin in early 2022, with the construction of new raised bridges at Drury interchange, and construction of the main interchange anticipated to begin in mid-2023. |
Jun 2023 | Stage 1B2 of the SH1 Papakura to Drury project received consent approval under the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act. |
