Stratford Renewable Energy Hub

Yancoal is proposing to develop the Stratford Renewable Energy Hub (SREH) at the site of the Stratford Mining Complex following the scheduled completion of mining in 2024.

The proposed SREH includes construction of a 300 megawatt (MW) / 3,600 megawatt hour (MWh) pumped hydro energy storage system and a 330 MW solar farm.

Construction of the project would comprise: 

  • construction of an upper reservoir 
  • reconfiguration of existing Stratford East Dam to act as a lower reservoir
  • construction of solar farm 
  • substation

Nov 2023 A Scoping Report and request for the Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements was published for the project.
Feb 2024 The Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements were published for the project.
Apr 2024 The Supplementary Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements were published for the project. These include threatened species and communities and migratory species that the project is likely to impact.
Jun 2024 The project was one of six renewable energy projects to be declared Critical State Significant Infrastructure.
Jul 2024 The NSW Government issued new SEARs for the project after the proponent withdrew their original planning application and submitted a new Scoping Report. This Scoping Report was unchanged from the original application in November 2023.
