Swan River Crossings Project

The Swan River Crossings Project involves the replacement of the current Fremantle Traffic Bridge with two lanes in each direction, wider active transport paths and a higher clearance for watercraft. A new dedicated passenger rail bridge will also be built.

Both bridges will be located between the existing Fremantle Traffic Bridge and the current rail bridge.

PROJECT HISTORY

Aug 2020 The Government of WA has invited proposals to develop, design and construct a new Swan River Crossing in Fremantle.
Aug 2020 The Government of WA announced that the Swan River Bridge will be replaced, taking pedestrians and cyclists off the existing Causeway bridge. The path will be at least six metres wide with dedicated cycle and pedestrian lanes, and cost approximately $50 million.
Feb 2021 The Government of WA announced the awarding of the contract to deliver the project to the Fremantle Bridges Alliance, including Main Roads WA, Laing O'Rourke, Arup and WSP.
Nov 2023 The Government of WA released the new bridge designs, which today were submitted for Development Approval.
Dec 2023 The Development Application was opened for public comment by the WA Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, with feedback closing on 1 February 2024.
Sep 2024 The Government of WA announced the commencement of construction on the project. The cost estimate was increased to $430 million, up from $230 million. The WA and Federal Governments will each provide an additional $100 million, bring their individual contributions to $215 million each.
