Sydney Metro - City and Southwest - Central Station Main Works

The Central Walk and Metro upgrade (Central Station Main Works - CSM) contract is for the connection of the new Sydney Metro to existing Central Station transit services. 

The project includes:

  • Construction of new underground Sydney Metro platforms beneath platforms 13, 14, and 15.

  • Development of Central Walk, a 19-metre-wide underground concourse connecting Chalmers Street to the suburban rail platforms, Sydney Metro platforms, light rail, and buses.

  • Upgrades to the northern concourse, featuring a new roof canopy and improved pedestrian thoroughfares.

  • Installation of escalators and lifts providing direct access to platforms 12 to 23.

PROJECT HISTORY

Mar 2017 Expressions of Interest (EOIs) opened for the Central Station Main Works.
Dec 2017 Planning approval for the Central Walk was granted.
Mar 2018 Contract for the Central Station Main Works was awarded.
Aug 2018 Construction commenced.
Nov 2022 Sydney Metro announced the completion of the 80-metre underground concourse which provides escalator access to Central Station's platforms 16 to 23. The pedestrian link also provides a connection between the lower northern concourse and the eastern suburbs railway concourse.
Aug 2024 The Chatswood to Sydenham metro service commenced operations.
