The Sydney Modern Project is an expansion of the Art Gallery of NSW. The scope of the project includes:
- three additional pavillions
- 3400 square meters of terraces, and
- redevelopment of a World War Two fuel bunker into an immersive gallery.

| Mar 2013 | The Art Gallery of NSW released their strategic vision and masterplan, including the development of a dedicated modern art wing. |
| Oct 2014 | 12 Architectural firms were been shortlisted to design the Sydney Modern expansion. |
| May 2015 | Japanese Firm SAANA was selected as the successful architects for the Sydney Modern. |
| Jun 2017 | The NSW Government committed $244 million for the construction of the Sydney Modern project. |
| Sep 2019 | Richard Crookes Construction was selected as the successful contractor for the construction of the Sydney Modern. |
| Nov 2019 | Construction commenced on the Sydney Modern Project. |
| Nov 2022 | The Art Gallery of NSW announced construction has been completed on the Sydney Modern Project, and will open to the public on 3 December. The expansion is the first public art museum in Australia to achieve a six-star Green Start design rating. |
