The Tomago Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is an energy storage project proposed by AGL to be located in Tomago, NSW in the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone. The scope of the works includes:
- a 500 megawatt / 2,000 megawatt hour BESS
- transmission connection to either the Transgrid Tomago 132 kilovolt or the Transgird Tomago 330 kilovolt substation through two potential transmission routes
- site infrastructure, including use of the approved Newcastle Power Station off-site laydown area, an office and maintenance buildings, control rooms, warehouses, site access, internal roads, parking, lighting and fencing.

May 2023 | SEARs was issued for the project. |
Nov 2023 | The project's Environmental Impact Statement was placed on public exhibition, closing 13 December. |
Nov 2024 | The project received development approval from the NSW Government. The approved Assessment Report provided a total estimated cost of $1.1 billion, with construction expected to commence in 2026 and be completed in 2029. |
Jul 2025 | AGL has awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to Fluence, following a Final Investment Decision announcement. |
