The Whyalla Hydrogen Facility, also referred to as the Hydrogen Jobs Plan, is a proposed electrolyser, storage, and generation project to be located in Whyalla, SA.
The scope of the works includes delivery of:
- a 250-megawatt (MW) hydrogen production facility
- a 200 MW hydrogen power plant, and
- 3,600 tonnes of hydrogen storage.
The project will be delivered using separate hydrogen delivery and hydrogen storage packages.
Hydrogen Power South Australia, a new government enterprise, has been established to own and operate the hydrogen power plant.

Jun 2022 | The South Australian Government announced the project in it 2022/23 Budget. |
Dec 2022 | A Request for Proposal phase was opened to deliver the project, closing 14 March, 2023. |
Oct 2023 | The Government of South Australia announced the preferred bidders for the project and announced the project will be delivered using separate hydrogen delivery and hydrogen storage packages. A consortium comprising ATCO Australia and BOC, a Linde subsidiary, was selected as the preferred hydrogen delivery bidder to deliver an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase. A separate ECI agreement has been made with EPIC Energy for the delivery of pipeline and hydrogen storage facility. |
Feb 2024 | The Government of South Australia announced GE Vernova as the preferred supplier for the hydrogen turbines. Additionally, it was confirmed that 82 new cabins would be built to accommodate workers on the Hydrogen Jobs Plan. |
Jun 2024 | The 2024-25 SA Budget allocated $389 million to the project. |
Nov 2024 | The Government of South Australia formally entered into an agreement with ATCO Australia to contract GE Vernova to supply four hydrogen turbines for the project. |
